Nickelodeon and Technology

Nickelodeon started off small. A few cartoons and numerous episodes of You Can't Do That On Television. With more technology, shows and cartoon series became more advanced. Instead of drawling out each characters, artists could use computers to create an easier and faster way to develop cartoons. The sets for television series have also become more advanced. More recently the television series iCarly uses a various amounts of technology for the show and within the show. The series uses their version of the Apple franchise called Pear in which the have "Pear phones" and "Pear Pads" along with other forms of "Pear" products which fill their home TV studio for their web show iCarly. With the advancement of technology television shows and series have become more advanced which allows a faster production time.

You Can't Do That On Television!

Nickelodeon Slime has become a major trademark for the station. Its presence is in many of its television series such as Figure It Out and also the Nickelodeon Teen Choice Awards. It is also part of the Nickelodeon logo. Where did the slime start? Looking back there is on television series that started it all, You Can't Do That On Television.

The show started on Febuary 3rd, 1979 as a low budget children's series at a local studio in Ontario, Canada. YCDTOT.com states "After a successful first season, the show's creators produced a short-lived spin-off of this show called Whatever Turns You On, which was almost the same exact show as You Can't Do That On Television, only it was taped instead of broadcast live. It was shown during prime-time hours, and it featured Laugh-In veteran, Ruth Buzzi.... In 1981, You Can't Do That On Television was still doing okay on CJOH, and an up-and-coming children's network in the United States called Nickelodeon took interest in the show and began airing the Canadian series once a week in a line up with a plethora of other Canadian and UK-based television programs. The Nickelodeon airings of You Can't Do That On Television were slightly different from the way it aired in Canada. The hour-long format was cut in half, axing the music videos, call-in segments, and contests. The show was less variety and 100 percent comedy. By 1982, CJOH-TV simply began producing half-hour episodes.

In 1984, while the show's ratings declined in Canada and was hardly watched, Nickelodeon aired the show five times a week, and it became the network's highest-rated television program. Kids across America were making slime and water sounds with their mouths and sending in their entries for the Slime-In, a contest hosted by Nickelodeon that flew a lucky kid to the set of You Can't Do That On Television to be SLIMED (which was replicated by Canada's YTV later with their version being called the Slime Light Sweepstakes).

You Can't Do That On Television continued as Nick's number one television show until Marc Summers began hosting another hit for Nick called Double Dare (which gave away Green Slime Shampoo and Soap as prizes) in 1986. This was the year that the show lost its hosts, Christine McGlade (1979-86) and Alasdair Gillis (1982-86), who were the most popular cast members. 1986 was also the year that YCDTOTV had added the future recording superstar Alanis Morissette, who was just as unknown as all the other cast members at that time."

With the rapid decrease of cast members and viewers, the show was canceled after it's 1987 season.

KABLAM!

KABLAM! :

-What happens when cartoons and comics collide? "KABLAM!" Welcome to the most fantastic development in comic book history—a comic book TV show where Henry and June, two tireless cartoon kids, turn the pages for you! Each episode is jam-packed with alternative animation and breaks all the rules of kids' cartoons. Watch "KABLAM!" and prepare to be blown away by some of the most mind-scrambling cartoons known to mankind! Each week you'll marvel at the ongoing adventures of the peppy plastic crime fighters of "Action League Now!" You'll wonder at the alternate reality of "Life With Loopy." You'll try to keep up with the nonstop energy of "Sniz and Fondue." And you'll puzzle over the primitive primates and aliens of "Prometheus and Bob."

"Loopy"

For those in the Loopy loop, life is, well...loopy. Loopy's a little kid with an unbelievably powerful imagination. What's more, she's not afraid to take what exists in her head and turn it into reality.

"Sniz and Fondue"

SNIZ - imagine what would happen if you put 915 spoonfuls of sugar on a candy bar and ate it in one bite.Providing you could keep it down, you'd probably end up acting like Sniz once all that sugar hit you. Sniz equals energy.

Fondue- is the kind of guy who's having a nervous breakdown all the time. You would too, if your name meant chunks of food dipped in oily, cheesy goo. And how could he NOT lose his marbles from time to time with a hyperactive freak like Sniz for a best friend?

"Prometheus and Bob"

PROMETHEUS- We recently discovered a top secret video shot 900,000 years ago by an alien named Prometheus using a remote control camera. The alien's mission: To teach basic survival skills to prehistoric man. His subject: A caveman named Bob.

BOB- a caveman, and he's a little bit slow (if you catch my drift). But then again, maybe Prometheus isn't really so almighty and powerful, since he keeps allowing a caveman like Bob to get ahold of his video equipment.

"Action League Now"

The series follows the adventures of a superhero league, composed of various action figures, toys, and dolls. This series started out on KABLAM and lead to a short lived spin off.

Other Popular Nick shows..

Clarissa Explains It All:

A show about a quirky , smart, and optomistic teenager trying to survive middle school through high school. By breaking the "fourth wall" she gets to talk to her audience while going through her share of teenaged dilemas. Her best friend is Sam and his usual entrance to the show is up a ladder and through her window (following his signature grundge-alternative guitar riff). Clarissa is always being pestered by her annoying little brother Ferguson (who's face is the center on a dart boarded behind her door). Clarissa Explains it all lead the way for many of the shows today such as Zoey 101, True Jackson VP, and of course iCarly. Reruns of the show will be airing in the fall of 2011.

Doug:

Doug Funnie is a Junior is high school who is always being pushed around by a bully names Rodger Klotz. He is also not very good at talking to his long time crush Patti Mayonnaise. His best friend is Skeeter and the one thing they love is The Beets (parody of The Beetles). They are a rock band with catchy tunes such as "Killer Tofu." Doug can always count on his dog Porkchop and his imaginative creative writing skills.

Salute Your Shorts:

One of the greatest and most memorable Nickelodeon shows (well in my opinion of course). Salute Your Shorts is set at a the summer camp of Camp Anawanna. Based off the 1986 book Salute Your Shorts: Life at a Summer Camp by Steve Salvkin, it focuses of teenage campers and a strict camp counselor. The title of the show comes from an old prank boys used to play on eachother by stealing boxer shorts and raising them on the flagpole. When other kids would see the shorts on the flag pole they would salute them as park of the prank. This show only lasted a few seasons but left its mark on Nickelodeon.

The One We All Remember..

The Adventures of Pete and Pete:
-Pete and Pete are two brothers that live in a somewhat surreal town in Wellsville. From the outside their family and town look normal but once you get to know them, everyone seems quite odd (their mother has a metal plate in her head which acts up when the microwave gets turned on). Pete, the older brother, narrates the stories and tries to make sense of the adventures in their daily lives.
